Cause and Effect Essay
My Influences
Throughout my life there have been many influences that shaped me into the person I am today. My mother and father taught me to work hard and treat others the way I would like to be treated. My sister pushed me to always incorporate fun into my everyday life. These influences impacted my life in several ways and caused me to be the person I am today.
Ever since I was a young child my parents consistently reminded me of the golden rule: “Treat others only in ways that you're willing to be treated.” Growing up I was never the perfect child. I disrespected my parents many times and they would always say, “Treat others only in ways that you're willing to be treated.” When mean to my friends or my little sister and my parents heard about this they would say, “Treat others only in ways that you're willing to be treated.” If I wanted to tell someone something rude my parents would say, “Treat others only in ways that you're willing to be treated.” After constant reminders one would think that this rule would be embedded into a child’s brain. However, this was not the case. One does not fully understand the golden rule until another person does something mean back to you because of what you did to them. Many times my sister and I would be playing doll house in our basement. Owning every toy imaginable, I always needed to have the doll house set up the way I wanted. But today was different, instead of setting it up the way I wanted, my sister organized the house before I could! This caused me to become angry and I threw a temper tantrum. My parents ran down the stairs and asked what the problem was. My sister bluntly stated that she set up the doll house how she liked it because Meagan always organized it. Upon hearing this, my parents stared at me and told me that if I shared the task of arranging the house then my sister would share the task too. While looking back this dumb tantrum forced me to understand that if I shared my sister would share too. The repetition of the golden rule allowed me to realize that if I was kind to my friend they would be kind back to me. If I listened to my parents they would listen to what I wanted to do and say yes more often. This rule guides me to be kind to everyone, everyday. If I treat them the way I want to be treated they will give me the same respect.
When living in my parents’ home I completed chores each week. Washing the dishes, making my bed, feeding the dog, practicing piano, and cleaning my room. In high school my parents encouraged me to apply for a job. I filled out an application at Shopko and they hired me. These chores, completed every week, allowed me to understand the idea of responsibility. Hard work, on-time, and getting along with coworkers were instilled in me by working at Shopko. Forcing me to work for what I wanted, stressed the importance of hard work. By encouraging me to work for things I wanted my parents taught me the meaning of hard work. Because of my work ethic and working well with coworkers, my managers complimented me on how I work. I give credit to my parents for instilling in me this important characteristic of who I am.
Growing up my sister and I never understood each other or could get along with each other. Recently we have learned how to. My sister and I are completely different when it comes to personalities. I am more serious, strict, and hard-working. She is free-spirited, fun, and focuses on the things that she wants to do instead of those things that she needs to do. Because of this my sister and I never have seen eye to eye. Recently I wanted to go on this trip with my friends. My parents said that it was my choice if I wanted to go but they did not approve of me going. Ultimately my sister’s fun seeking self encouraged me to do something fun instead of always being serious and listening to my parents. When she told me this I took her advice and decided I would go on this trip. In the end, the trip did not happen but my sister taught me that in order to live a happy life there must be fun in it. My sister gave me a great gift and whenever I need something fun to do, I call her up and she gives me an idea in under five seconds.
My mother, father, and my sister have been the main influences in my life. My parents have taught me hard work and to treat others the way you want to be treated is very important in life. My sister showed me that adding fun into everyday life will allow me to be a happier person. Because of these influences I have become a hardworking, kind, and fun-seeking person.

Family
Family, everyone’s families are a part of their everyday lives. Although they may not see them or talk to them daily, they are the ones that provide support, love, and security. Defining family is a hard task. However, looking at people who make up a family and what qualities a family has helps us to define what a family is.
When asking others who their family consists of, their answers varied greatly. Many people said that their family has a mother, a father, and siblings. Others said that their family had a single parent. Still, others said that their family was composed of aunts and uncles. Several people said that their family not only is composed of a mother, a father, and siblings, it also includes grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Asking people who makes up their family ended with a variety of descriptions. While talking with people it became obvious that the different type of people in one’s family does not necessarily matter it is the qualities they contain.
While trying to define family I realized that it was hard to do so in terms of whom one lives with. Instead, it is apparent that the words security, support, and love come to mind anytime the word family is said. If security, support, and love are evident then people can be considered a family. Who one lives with does not necessarily define family. The three qualities decide who is considered a family.
Security means that one feels protected and safe with those they consider family. A family protects those they care about when others try to harm a member of their family. The place where a family lives allows the members to feel comfortable being in their home and free from those who make them feel unsafe. Security can also be in terms of financial security. This means that a family is able to feed, cloth, and house themselves. These three essentials of life are valued as important components of security. Feeling secure means having a sense of safety, protection, and little financial worries.
Supporting members in one’s family is important to a family’s foundation. Supporting one another means that they are available whenever one would like to accomplish something in life or need help with a problem they have. If a family member is having trouble with a drug addiction and would like to stop his addiction, family members constantly provide ways to break the addiction. They offer their help, take the family member to a detoxification center, and always provide encouragement. When a family member says they would like to learn how to play the piano others within the family encourage them to learn to play. Families provide money for piano lessons and books. They shuttle the piano student to and from lessons each week. When teachers give recitals to showcase their students abilities, the family comes to every recital to support their piano student. Family members encourage the student to practice, drive them to and from lessons, recitals, competition, and listen to every piece of piano music that is played. Families encourage, support, and help any other family member that is in need.
While security and support are important components to a family, love is the key characteristic when defining family. Love is showing affection and having feelings towards another. Families possess strong feelings and emotions toward one another. These emotions come out in frustration, happiness, sadness, and many others. Without all of these feelings a family would not exist and they would not be able to support and provide security for those they love.
The word family means that love, support, and security are present in everyday lives. Family provides protection and safety from those who can harm. They provide financial means so one can accomplish their goals in life. Families encourage and help so that others are able to accomplish a goal or try to resolve a problem they are having. Above all, a family loves one another. Showing affection and having feelings towards others bring love to a family. A family is defined in the qualities they have; love, support, and security.

Soundtrack to My Life-Response
"Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?"
Van Morrison
I choose this song because we should tell the important people in our life that we love them every day.
"Live Like You Were Dying"
Tim McGraw
I choose this song because this is the motto I try to live by.
"Butterfly Kisses"
Bob Carlisle
This song is apart of my life because I am going to dance with my father at my wedding to this song.
"Just Dance"
Lady Gaga
Dancing makes everything feel better :)
"You Are Loved"
Josh Groban
Sung at my freshman year varsity night live and was very impressed!
"Forro e Paixao"
Trio Virgulino
My friend Debora, who is from Brazil, got me hooked on this music and makes me want to learn how to really dance.
"Clair du Lune"
Piano
I played for 11 years and was never that great but this song made me want to play the piano for that long.
"The Circle of Life"
The Lion King
My favorite disney movie...EVER. I wish I could sing well to it!
I feel that this mix shows that I am a sensitive, calm person who likes to have fun in life. This soundtrack shows that I enjoys listening to different kinds of music and am open to listening to new things. I do not think that it necessarily puts me into a subculture.
I feel that if a person listened to my music selection that they my be able to figure somethings out about me. But I would rather them judge me on who I am not the music I listen too. A person we be able to see that I try to live my day without regrets, to have fun, and be happen. But I do not think that they would be able to tell the smaller details of who I am.
When we were to judge someone based on their songs I think I was not accurate at all. This activity was hard for me because I could not judge who they were just based on the music they listened to.
When another student in our class me by my music, the student was pretty dead on. She got my gender right and concluded that I would go out on the weekends but that I could also have fun staying in. The student also concluded that I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. The student even figured out what I would normally be wearing on a day to day basis. The only comment that the student made that was incorrect was that I could possibly be involved in church groups. I am not in a church group although my mother wants me to be.
I really enjoyed this activity. But it was very hard for me to judge a person solely on there music.

Compare and Contrast
My Homes: Before College and During College
Every one of us has a home. Home is where one lives with their family. As many high school students move to college their sense of home changes drastically. The before college home and during college home are different in many respects. When looking at the bed and bathrooms of one’s pre-college home to those during college there is a startling difference.
In the room on the floor there is a bed. The comfy, large, plush bed lies a few inches above the ground and is the main focus of the room. Placed at the head of the bed are four white, fluffy pillows to fall asleep upon. A white comforter covers the bed and keeps the occupants warm through the coldest nights. Upon laying down on the bed one can feel the warmth of the bed lulling them to sleep. Heads rest upon the pillows and within minutes the occupant of the bed is asleep dreaming of relaxing on a beach in some exotic location. The morning brings a rested, wide awake individual that is ready to face the challenges of the day.
The small room barely holds a bed for the student to sleep on. Ready to try the bed, the student tries to make their way onto the bed. At six feet above the ground the climb to the top will be simple. Or so the student thought. A ledge is to the left of the bed and a squeaky futon sits underneath it. The student sets one foot on the futon and puts the one foot onto the ledge and then the other. Standing with one foot on the ledge, a knee on the bed, and hands on the railing the student uses their strength to pull themselves onto the bed. Climbing onto the bed is a workout! Once on the bed the student realizes the bed is smaller and narrower then it looked from the ground. The blue striped comforter and a single pillow calls the student to sleep. The lumpy, squeaky, suffocating bed causes tossing and turning throughout the night and a wake up or two or three. Morning arrives and the grumpy, sleep deprived student tries to face their day without falling asleep in classes.
One toilet, one sink, one mirror, and one shower. The four essentials of a bathroom are for the use of a single person. Perfume, make-up, facial wash, lotion, and deodorant line the cabinets to the left of the mirror. Placed next to the sink is a cup, a towel and hand soap. Stuffed in the a drawer underneath the sink lay a toothbrush, toothpaste, and hair ties. Toilet paper, the soft Charmin brand, hangs on the wall across from the toilet. The process of getting ready for the day can be as short or as long as the user would like. Interruptions are minimal, usually parents saying have a good day or see you tonight. For one person the bathroom is large enough to get ready to face the day.
Six bathroom stalls, six sinks, six mirror, and six showers. The bathrooms, shared by sixty women, formulate three words that are synonymous to a dorm bathroom. Yucky! Disgusting! Gross! When said together, these three words compile a mental picture of dorm bathrooms. Black, brown, and blond hair stick to the sinks and showers. Every day hair causes drains to clog and grey, soapy water puddles on the shower floor. The shower head sprays out hot water that only last for two minutes before cold water paralyses the person in the shower. Frustration builds up in students and their daily getting ready routine shortens considerable because of the bathroom conditions.
Home changes throughout a person’s life. The before college and during college home changes one’s sense of home drastically. The bed and bathroom situations frustrate students because they are unfamiliar. Students figure out, in a short time, that their idea of home has changed.

The Correct Way to Make an Oreo Ball!
Each person can do at least one thing very well. Whether it is cooking, playing a sport, writing, or any other of the numerous activities there are, everyone can do one thing well. While I am not the greatest cook I am an expert at making Oreo balls. The only reason I am able to make these is because it requires a minimal amount of cooking and allows me to eat them afterwards!
The Oreo ball recipe calls for three ingredients. These three ingredients include; Oreos, Philadelphia cream cheese, and white chocolate chips. To make these wonderful treats one also needs a blender, a double boiler to melt the white chocolate in, and a utensil that allows the excess white chocolate to drip from the ball. After gathering all of the ingredients and baking utensils one can begin creating these wonderfully tasty, little treats.
First crush one package of regular Oreos, not double stuffed. To achieve this stick the package of Oreos into a food processor and crush until they are tiny pieces that lack chunks. Next, take a one, eight ounce package of Philadelphia cream cheese and place it in the microwave for thirty seconds. Make sure the cream cheese softens so that it will easily mix with the crushed Oreos.
After the two ingredients are prepared place the Oreo crumbs and the cream cheese into a mixer. Allow them to mix for a few minutes. If after a few minutes pass and there is still white in the mix, keep blending. Blend the mixture evenly until there is no white in the mix.
Following this take the mixture and roll into balls. The balls should be about one-inch in size. When finished rolling the balls place them onto a cookie sheet. The amount of balls on each cookie sheet does not matter as long as there is a little space between each of them. After rolling all of the balls and putting them on the cookie sheet, place them in the freezer for at least two hours. Placing them in the freezer allows the Oreo balls to harden and makes it easier for the white chocolate to quickly harden and mold to the balls.
When sufficient time has elapsed for the Oreo balls to freeze begin to melt the white chocolate chips. Use a double broiler to do this. Put the stove on medium to low heat and place the white chocolate chips into the double boiler. Allow for the white chocolate chips to fully melt but do not let them burn. As soon as the chocolate melts take it off the burner and remove the Oreo balls from the freezer.
When the pan is off the burner, one by one, drop an Oreo ball into it. Roll the Oreo ball in the white chocolate so that white chocolate completely covers it. Then lift the Oreo ball with a utensil and allow it to drip for a few seconds. Make sure that the utensil you are using is one that will allow the excess white chocolate to drip off and go back into the pan. Repeat this process until all of the Oreo balls are covered in white chocolate and place each of them back onto the cookie sheet. When finished dipping, place the Oreo balls back into the freezer for a few minutes. Do this so that they will harden.
After the balls have hardened, take them out of the freezer. They are now ready to be eaten!

Dress Up Day!
When given this assignment, I at first, had no idea what I was going to wear! I went to one of my friend's dorm room and looked at her clothes and found the dress that I wore on dress up day. The dress was hippie-like pattern that was long sleeved and was colored in deep greens and purples. I also wore black tights and Ugg boots. The dress, Ugg boots, and tight combination is something that I would never normally wear.
Only a few people said something about what I was wearing. All of the people that made a remark were those that knew me. One of the girls I know said, "Meagan, what the hell are you wearing?" This surprised me because the girl was very bold in telling me that she did not like what I wore. The other girls in my hall also looked at me and laughed. While I did not take this personally because I was doing an English experiment, I was startled by how many people openly laugh at others who are wearing clothing that is different from the norm.
While walking around Davies and to my usual classes I was astonished to see how many people give other people the once-over because of what they are wearing. I thought that this was rude. I also did not appreciate people judging me because of what I was wearing instead of who I was as a person.
By the end of the day I can say that I ended up liking the outfit that I considered out of my norm. This experiment has taught me that being different and dressing different is okay. And from now on I am going to try very hard not to judge others based on what they wear. It is unrealistic to say that I will never do it again but this experiment has taught me the importance for being who and what you are and not changing for others just because they do not like what you look like.

Anthropological Standpoint
This ethnography assignment has taught me many things about the university that I attend. This activity has made me observe more, question more, and go out of my comfort zone more than I would normally do.
From these findings I feel that the faculty and students at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire truly care about their campus.
Many students spend a big chunk of their time studying for their classes. Most students tend to study in the library or in their dorm room. Also, many listen to music when they study because they feel that this helps them focus.
The library holds an abundance of resources for the students and faculty to use. Included in this are microfiche, newspapers, journals, books, and many others. Students need to take use of these resources and the people who work there are more than willing to help them with anything.
Students contribute to making the campus look beautiful. The many sculptures that adorn the university are generously donated by alumni. And all have a meaning behind them as to why they are chosen.
The faculty at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is very generous. They are open to helping all students who would like help and they have very little bad things to say about their students. Most feel that cheating is not a major problem in their classroom but those that do are dealt with. They also think that most students are here to learn and that they are respectful to their professors. The only problem some professors have with their students is the fact that they seem to have a greater sense of entitlement. Those who feel this way think that they should receive an “A” in the class just because they do the work, not necessarily because they put effort into it.
While observing and asking questions I have learned that the students and faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire are truly one of a kind individuals who do a wonderful job representing this university.
