When given this assignment, I at first, had no idea what I was going to wear! I went to one of my friend's dorm room and looked at her clothes and found the dress that I wore on dress up day. The dress was hippie-like pattern that was long sleeved and was colored in deep greens and purples. I also wore black tights and Ugg boots. The dress, Ugg boots, and tight combination is something that I would never normally wear.
Only a few people said something about what I was wearing. All of the people that made a remark were those that knew me. One of the girls I know said, "Meagan, what the hell are you wearing?" This surprised me because the girl was very bold in telling me that she did not like what I wore. The other girls in my hall also looked at me and laughed. While I did not take this personally because I was doing an English experiment, I was startled by how many people openly laugh at others who are wearing clothing that is different from the norm.
While walking around Davies and to my usual classes I was astonished to see how many people give other people the once-over because of what they are wearing. I thought that this was rude. I also did not appreciate people judging me because of what I was wearing instead of who I was as a person.
By the end of the day I can say that I ended up liking the outfit that I considered out of my norm. This experiment has taught me that being different and dressing different is okay. And from now on I am going to try very hard not to judge others based on what they wear. It is unrealistic to say that I will never do it again but this experiment has taught me the importance for being who and what you are and not changing for others just because they do not like what you look like.

Anthropological Standpoint
This ethnography assignment has taught me many things about the university that I attend. This activity has made me observe more, question more, and go out of my comfort zone more than I would normally do.
From these findings I feel that the faculty and students at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire truly care about their campus.
Many students spend a big chunk of their time studying for their classes. Most students tend to study in the library or in their dorm room. Also, many listen to music when they study because they feel that this helps them focus.
The library holds an abundance of resources for the students and faculty to use. Included in this are microfiche, newspapers, journals, books, and many others. Students need to take use of these resources and the people who work there are more than willing to help them with anything.
Students contribute to making the campus look beautiful. The many sculptures that adorn the university are generously donated by alumni. And all have a meaning behind them as to why they are chosen.
The faculty at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is very generous. They are open to helping all students who would like help and they have very little bad things to say about their students. Most feel that cheating is not a major problem in their classroom but those that do are dealt with. They also think that most students are here to learn and that they are respectful to their professors. The only problem some professors have with their students is the fact that they seem to have a greater sense of entitlement. Those who feel this way think that they should receive an “A” in the class just because they do the work, not necessarily because they put effort into it.
While observing and asking questions I have learned that the students and faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire are truly one of a kind individuals who do a wonderful job representing this university.

Professor's Talk
The first professor I talked to, about the change in behaviors of students from when they began teaching to now, was Professor Winnifred Bryant. Bryant is an assistant professor and endocrine physiologist at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She said that the only main difference that she sees from when she started is that the students have a greater since of entitlement. Her students feel that if they do the readings they should receive an “A” in the class. More kids feel this way compared to when she first started five years ago. She also said that cheating has not increased in her five years of teaching.
The second professor I talk to was Elsa Dorrego, a Spanish professor at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She said that most things have not changed since she began teaching. However, she noticed the changes from semester to semester when she began to hand out rules of the classroom along with her syllabus. She feels that with the rules she gives out students tend to be more respectful. She also said that cheating is not a big problem in her classroom, she has had only one instance of cheating and it was always the same person.

STUDY!!!!!
I interviewed five random people about their study habits and where they prefer to study. The first person I interviewed said that she normally studies in her dorm’s study lounge. When asked about her study habits for a test she said that depending on which test it was for determined how much studying in advance she would do. The next person I interviewed said that she studies in her room most of the time. She uses note cards to study for most subjects. She also said that most of the time she studies the day before the test but that she is trying to start studying earlier for her tests. The third person I interviewed said that he does not actually study that much for anything. The next person I interviewed said that he studies in his room or in the library depending on his mood. But in order to study he always needs to be listening to music. The last person I interviewed had the same study habits as the previous one. She said that she either studies in the library or in her room and that music must be playing in order for her to concentrate on what she is studying. There are many different ways to study and places to study. It all depends on the person's individual preferences.
Differences in World Education Systems
When I asked International Exchange student Debora Biasutti what the main difference between the education system in Brazil and the education system in the United States is, her reply surprised me. There are two main differences from the schooling in Brazil when compared to schooling in the United States. The first major difference is that students do not move from class to class, the professors do. The second is that in Brazil students do not take random classes like the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire requires us to do. A typical first semester in Brazil requires all students to take the same classes. As the second semester begins students take classes that are super specific to their major. Schooling in Brazil is not a liberal education like it is at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
XF
What is XF? These two letters are assigned to those students who are caught performing academic dishonesty. The two letters can affect any of us who cheat or plagiarize. If a student is caught being academically dishonest the professor can give the student an XF instead of a grade. This will follow the student for the rest of their academic record and could potentially stop them from getting into another college or a specific program at the college they are already enrolled at.
Daedalus
Facing Phillips Hall on the left side of the building there is a sculpture. This sculpture is named Daedalus and was a gift from the alumni. When I first looked at this sculpture I noticed on the upper right hand side there is a sun and that the man has wings. I feel that this sculpture represents the many paths each student has to take throughout their years at UWEC. I feel that this sculpture shows that one must go many ways in order to succeed in life. After seeing this sculpture and finding out its name I decided to look up Daedalus. I knew I had heard this name before. I learned that Daedalus was a Greek inventor and craftsman. Like this man those who go into the science field are the inventors. They invent cures or find better way to improve our lives and our communities.
What is a BLUGOLD?
The colors blue and gold were chosen in 1961 as the official colors of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Although UWEC has never had an official mascot many have tried to give it one. Although they have never succeeded in making an official mascot many students have said the same thing when they are asked what is a BLUGOLD? Many have said that a BLUGOLD is the spirit of the school from the classrooms to the campus to the extra curricular activities. The students at UWEC are the Bluegolds. We represent our school better then any mascot could. We represent what our school and its community has to offer!
MICROFICHE…Where is it?
Microfiche is located on the second floor of the McIntyre Library. There are cabinets upon cabinets of microfiche. Microfiche allows the library to store large amounts of written work in a small space. To look at a microfiche one must use a projector. One should first turn the projector on and then place the microfiche on a plate so it can be read by the viewer.
WHERE CAN I FIND A NEWSPAPER? I NEED A NEWSPAPER!
Students at UWEC have no excuse when they say they lack the resource of a newspaper. A newspaper is very easy to find and is conveniently located in the library. What a surprise! On the second floor of the library one can find local, state, national, and newspapers in foreign languages written in America geared for a specific population. While looking at the Newspapers, I selected The New York Times. The heading stated $250 Billion Plan Seeks to Address Crisis in Housing. This article describes how Obama plans to help homeowners refinance their mortgages and avoid foreclosure. With this plan over nine million American homeowners will be helped. Obama knows that this plan will not save every home, but instead he hopes that it will give many Americans the chance to rebuild. With the library’s abundance of newspapers there is no reason that students should not be informed on current events.

Clothes Make The Person
While walking around campus people are everywhere and all of them wear different articles of clothing. At college every person wears a different style of clothing. That style affects how people see other people. The brand of clothing as well as the type of clothing makes the person.
While walking to class I see a person dressed up in a pants suit and high heels. She walks quickly along the sidewalk to class. When I see students dressed up this much on campus a few thoughts come to mind. I immediately think that they work very hard at classes, show up on time, engage in extracurricular activities, and work outside of school. Other students perceive these students as hard-working students who are involved in many outside activities in addition to classes.
A t-shirt and shorts covered by warm-up sweats and jacket. The latest, Nike brand tennis shoes cover their feet. Embroidered on more than one of the articles of clothing is a team logo. By looking at this student any one would likely conclude that they passionately play a sport on one of the numerous school teams or avidly watch the games on television or regularly attends sporting events. Instead of completing homework this student watches, plays, or attends sporting events. The ability to recite scores of games, to spit out statistics of the team’s players, to memorize the schedule of the games, and to know the coaches comes naturally to these students. When students see a person wearing this type of clothing one assumes that these students concentrate on anything that involves sports.
Worn by many students on campus faded jeans and a worn out t-shirt represent the laid back and less serious students. Students perceive those who wear these articles of clothing as easy to get along. These students do not only concentrate on academic studies but they also make time for having fun. They complete most of their work on time but they also leave enough time to go exercise, hang out with friends, watch a movie, or anything else they enjoy doing that allows them to relax for a bit. The faded jeans and worn out t-shirt look accounts for what many students wear on campus and classify them as laid back and fun to hang out with.
Abercrombie and Fitch. American Eagle. Hollister. These three stores contribute to how students perceive those that wear these brands. Many times these clothes convey the words preppy, popular, rude, and rich. Many times people view those who wear this type of clothing as interested in only themselves and their few selected friends. People do not approach them because of the air about them that says, Why are you talking to me? Do you think you can talk to me and that I am even listening to you? Students identify the people who wear this type of clothing as popular, rude, and often times unapproachable.
What people wear truly affect how others view them. From the serious students, to those that love sports, to those that do well in school but also make time for themselves, to those that are popular, how they dress themselves make other students put them into a group. On campus the type of clothing and the brand of clothing students wear makes them who they are. The clothes we wear are how others perceive us.

Description Essay
SAMMY’S PIZZA AND RESTAURANT. 2812 London Road. Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Opening their doors in 1957 Sammy’s continues to be a family favorite. Although the restaurant moved a few times since opening in 1957 their service and their food remains excellent. While Sammy’s serves all types of food they are recognized for their tasty pizza.
A bar and a restaurant, connected by a short, small hallway, create two extremely different eating environments, serving the same food in one location.
The door to the bar opens and customers can sit wherever they feel like, at the bar, or the tall tables, or at the booth in the back. The smoky bar holds many television sets that are tuned in to different stations to appease a variety of customers. The bar, stocked with any kind of drink one would like, runs the length of the side wall. With a quick hand the bar tender mixes your drink and you are able to sit back and relax. The bar tender’s friendliness and fast service brings customers back to Sammy’s time after time, generating the regulars.
As customers walk in, bright colors and scenes of Italy decorate the wall of the restaurant. The welcoming and smiling hostess walks customers to their table. As soon as the customer’s are seated the hostess hands a menu out to each person. The menu is filled with numerous kinds of pizza. But before you can decide on one the smell of pizza dough, sauce, melted cheese, and meat drift towards your noise and brings you to the streets of Italy themselves… the water beats against the canal, the couple kissing in the gondola makes the corners of your mouth turn upward into a smile, the hustle and bustle of Italians shuffling on the street, the expansive, blueness of the Mediterranean Sea, and the pizza and pasta from local pizzerias and restaurants wafting towards you…
The waitress walking with a bouncy step stops at the head of the table. The delicious looking pizza in the waitress’s hand puts your daydream on hold. The waitress places the hot pizza in the middle of the table and the white plates in front of you. With energy and a friendly smile she tells you to enjoy your meal and to let her know if you need anything. You foolishly look around before snatching a few pieces and lay them on your plate.
You open your mouth and take a large bite of the melting cheese, the juicy pepperoni, and the red, light, savory sauce. The smaller, square pieces enable you to grab piece after piece. The tasty blend of spices, the fresh, natural ingredients intensify the flavor of the pizza. The flavor of the pizza confirms that Sammy’s makes the dough and cuts only the freshest ingredients daily. After devouring an entire large pizza your stomach is content and full.
The waitress checks back in, she smiles and you realize she knows exactly what you are thinking. Wow! That pizza was amazing. I am definitely going to come back here again soon. She hands you the check and says that she hope you enjoyed your meal and to come and visit again soon. The price on the check seems like a reasonable price for such incredible pieces of pizza.
Being one of the best pizzas you will ever taste it satisfies the stomach and will make anyone want to come back for another pizza. The friendly service, the atmosphere of the bar and restaurant, and the savory pizza make this restaurant a wonderful choice when craving pizza!

Narration Essay
While the teacher lectured, I stared out the window… I sat in Professor Walter’s marine life class. “Today, we will be finishing up on tidal waves and learning about marine animals,” Professor Walter said. “Please pay attention, the information you learn today will be on a quiz or test that you have in the near future.”
Most days I would pay close attention to Professor Walter’s lectures because they were extremely interesting and very informative. However, today I was not interested in paying attention to his lecture. So I began to stare out the window. It was winter in Wisconsin and as one can imagine it is very cold and snows frequently. Today, the weather decided to dump snow on us so I began to drift to a warmer place… Florida!
It was hot, over 70 degrees, the waves were crashing into the sand, and I had a perfect view of the ocean in my red beach chair. In the distance I saw two young boys covering their father in sand. The mother, delighted by this scene, began to take pictures with her camera. In front of me was a blond, curly haired, blue-eyed girl splashing in the shallow stretch of ocean. The sun was hot on my skin and I decided to go into the water and jump some waves. The waves came one after another and pounded into me. I soon became tired and decide that I should go back and sit in my red beach chair. As I was getting out of the water a gigantic wave crashed into me and brought me under.
The force of the wave snapped me back to Professor Walter’s lecture. “Wow! I’m glad that did not really happen,” I whispered.
My professor must have noticed that I was not paying enough attention to his lecture. He said, “Meagan, can you name a characteristic of a tidal wave?”
Thinking back to my daydream and what had just happened I replied, “Tidal waves can be very strong.” I thought it was a decent characteristic, my daydream had obviously thought so too! The class chuckled and Professor Walter moved on to an eager student in the front who clearly knew the answer to his question.
Out the window the snow continued to fall and I slipped back into my Florida daydream. Once again I sat in my red beach chair and looked out into the ocean. After my near drowning experience with the big wave I decided a nap was necessary. As I was drifting off to sleep, I saw a pod of dolphins in the distance. They were magnificent creatures with sleek bodies with an incredible amount of speed. I thought about the dolphins as I drifted out and that is when I heard the scream.
The scream snapped me out of my daydream. I looked around the lecture hall trying to figure out who had screamed and taken me away from the warm beach of Florida. To my surprise Professor Walter had brought in a small pool filled with sea cucumbers, crabs, sea sponges, small fish, and coral. The professor invited us to come up and observe and touch the marine life. Apparently the scream that snapped me back to the lecture was from a tall, brown haired girl who sat in the front. I asked a boy next to me why she had screamed.
He replied, “She put her hand in the pool wanting to feel the sea cucumber. Instead, she was pinched by a crab who mistook her fingers for food.” I chuckled at what the sight must have looked like and tried to focus my attention on Professor Walter.
Professor Walter then looked at the clock and said, “Time flew by today.” He then looked directly at me and said, “I noticed a few of you who were not paying attention. Try to do better next time. Because of the few who were not paying attention we are going to have a quiz tomarrow. The quiz will contain an essay on the characteristics of tidal waves and multiple choice questions on the marine animals that we saw today in class.
Great I thought to myself. Tonight I will have to study and fill in the notes that I missed while I was in Florida. I walked out of the lecture hall and decided to never daydream while in my marine life class again. I had learned my lesson! My daydreaming trips to Florida would have to come after taking notes in Professor Walter’s Marin Life class.

Intro to Me
I am a freshman at a University where I am studying Elementary Education and Spanish. I have always known that I wanted to become a teacher when I was older and now I am learning how to become one! I am also majoring in Spanish. Because of high school spanish and trips to Costa Rica, Spain, and Nicaragua, I have decided to study this too!
Outside of school I love to go hiking, lay outside and read a good book, hang out with friends and family, travel, and watch movies. I enjoy playing golf even though I am not the best at it and I also like playing other sports just for the fun of it.
I am from Madison, Wisconsin and have lived there all my life. I love the big city feel and everything that Madison has to offer. I enjoy going downtown, overlooking the lakes from The Terrace and Union, going to the zoo, walking down state street, and eating at La Hacienda (the best Mexican restaurant in Madison).
