While walking around campus people are everywhere and all of them wear different articles of clothing. At college every person wears a different style of clothing. That style affects how people see other people. The brand of clothing as well as the type of clothing makes the person.
While walking to class I see a person dressed up in a pants suit and high heels. She walks quickly along the sidewalk to class. When I see students dressed up this much on campus a few thoughts come to mind. I immediately think that they work very hard at classes, show up on time, engage in extracurricular activities, and work outside of school. Other students perceive these students as hard-working students who are involved in many outside activities in addition to classes.
A t-shirt and shorts covered by warm-up sweats and jacket. The latest, Nike brand tennis shoes cover their feet. Embroidered on more than one of the articles of clothing is a team logo. By looking at this student any one would likely conclude that they passionately play a sport on one of the numerous school teams or avidly watch the games on television or regularly attends sporting events. Instead of completing homework this student watches, plays, or attends sporting events. The ability to recite scores of games, to spit out statistics of the team’s players, to memorize the schedule of the games, and to know the coaches comes naturally to these students. When students see a person wearing this type of clothing one assumes that these students concentrate on anything that involves sports.
Worn by many students on campus faded jeans and a worn out t-shirt represent the laid back and less serious students. Students perceive those who wear these articles of clothing as easy to get along. These students do not only concentrate on academic studies but they also make time for having fun. They complete most of their work on time but they also leave enough time to go exercise, hang out with friends, watch a movie, or anything else they enjoy doing that allows them to relax for a bit. The faded jeans and worn out t-shirt look accounts for what many students wear on campus and classify them as laid back and fun to hang out with.
Abercrombie and Fitch. American Eagle. Hollister. These three stores contribute to how students perceive those that wear these brands. Many times these clothes convey the words preppy, popular, rude, and rich. Many times people view those who wear this type of clothing as interested in only themselves and their few selected friends. People do not approach them because of the air about them that says, Why are you talking to me? Do you think you can talk to me and that I am even listening to you? Students identify the people who wear this type of clothing as popular, rude, and often times unapproachable.
What people wear truly affect how others view them. From the serious students, to those that love sports, to those that do well in school but also make time for themselves, to those that are popular, how they dress themselves make other students put them into a group. On campus the type of clothing and the brand of clothing students wear makes them who they are. The clothes we wear are how others perceive us.
